The Long Beach Razor Clam Festival is back and here to stay!
2016 marks the fourth year the event has been drawing crowds since ending its sixty-four year hiatus (The original event ran from 1940-1948 in Long Beach, WA). With high domoic acid levels having meant a very limited number of clam dig dates and locations here in Washington this spring, The 2016 Razor Clam Festival is destined to be a go-to event on April 9 & 10.
And why not? Free lessons in Clam digging and cleaning, Bathing Beauties (aka Clam Cuties), Pirates, Dennis Duck and a Razor Clam mascot provide entertainment, a Clam Fritter made in the World’s Largest Fry Pan, amateur and professional chowder contests (get in line early if you want to taste the professionals’ chowder!), clam dig contests, vendors… the list goes on! North Jetty Brewing will be on hand and the location to get, er, “bivalveless” food. Our local kiddos decorate clam guns, with the winners chosen by the public. You won’t want to miss the chance to get your photo taken with a Mermaid, or enjoy the sounds of North Coast Blues Band. Good times!
Now that the Razor Clam Festival has a better idea of its structure than it did its inaugural comeback year, it was time to rebuild the site to better support the volunteer organizers’ efforts. Since we built the original site in WordPress, we were able to create a new theme (the look/feel of a WordPress site), move content around a bit, update photos, and a new site was born. We especially like the new interactive map, that shows the locations of events, all within walking distance of one another.
The Razor Clam Festival is produced by volunteers of the Long Beach Merchants Association, in cooperation with the City of Long Beach and thanks to the generosity of quite a number of sponsors. Please, tell them thank you!
