Uh, Website? Yeah, we need to talk.

Dear website

Dear Website,

We’ve been together for several years now, and I’ve really enjoyed our time together.  We’ve had fun!  We’ve made new friends together.

I’m just not happy anymore.  I know, I know; you wanted me to spoil you with fresh posts and page updates, and I got busy and took you for granted.  But this relationship isn’t working for me.

Listen, I meant to keep your technology up to date, and upgrade you over time so you could be the business asset I need you to be.  But instead, I found myself chasing the next shiny new marketing object – and forgetting all about you.

Yeah, yeah, I’ve seen the headlines about how quickly web technology changes, and how an old, outdated website can actually harm my business.  I’ve also learned that sending good prospects to a bad website leads to missed opportunities and lost sales, but like I said, I’ve been really busy.  Being a small business owner can be overwhelming!

I’d love to say “It’s not you, it’s me” but it’s totally you. Not to be rude, but you aren’t the smart, attractive site I fell in love with several years back. You’ve changed. A lot.  Or maybe it’s the world that’s changed –and you haven’t kept up.  I hate to say it, but you look really old fashioned now.  Plus, I can see from your stats that you’ve been losing visitors each month, and Google can’t index your pages because of old code, broken links, and other errors.  This doesn’t make either one of us look very good, does it?

For the record, I am NOT having an affair.  My relationship with Facebook is completely platonic.  Facebook is a giver: posts, delicious food photos, coupons, restaurant recommendations, jokes, puppies & kittens… it offers easy-to-understand insights and connects me to my customers.  And it changes to become what each customer needs – whether on a phone, tablet or desktop machine.  I LOVE Facebook.  But we’re just really good friends – I promise.

I can’t do this anymore. I can’t pretend that you are an accurate reflection of my business, or that you can give my visitors what they need. Turns out that I care too much about my business and my customers to just continue on like this…and something has to change.

I need a website that…

  1. Loads FAST.
  2. Works correctly across devices and platforms.
  3. Makes friends with the Google gang.
  4. Cleans the living room (aka front page).  It’s sooo cluttered!
  5. Engages people and converts their visits to sales.

Here’s the bottom line, Website: I need more.  I need you to be fully integrated with all of my marketing initiatives – social, email, web, etc. – with consistent branding and messaging across all channels.  I need you to be a business asset for me, one that consistently communicates my brand and brings in more sales for my business.
