Jake the Alligator Man's Birthday Party & Car Show

We embrace “the Jake” year-round here at beachdog.com.  He’s a Long Beach icon, a side-show freak, a gentleman with varied and distinct interests.  Ya gotta love Jake the Alligator Man!

Our very own Wendy is the Chairperson for Jake’s annual birthday party, which is held the first Saturday in August, right in front of his home downtown, Marsh’s Free Museum.  She’s brought a real fun and funky vibe to the bash, turning the burgeoning children’s cake and ice cream party into a full day of fun and frivolity for all ages.  Follow Jake on MySpace, FaceBook (and his birthday party page), at Marsh’s Free Museum and on our own funbeach.com!

Wendy is Jack Russell of All Trades here at beachdog.com, and has been training to translate her artistic ability into commercial graphic art.  The posters shown here are the first she’s done from concept through pre-press.  She did the makeup, dressing and staging of the model in the photos, arranged several styles of photo shoot, and designed the two sizes of poster using professional tools.  We think she’s done an amazing job, don’t you?

Be sure to check out Jake’s pages on MySpace, FaceBook (and his birthday party page), and funbeach.com for more of the story, especially the photos.  Well done, Wendy!

It’s sunny in Long Beach

And yet, the dogs still want to be inside.  If only we could teach them to build web sites so we could go outside in their stead.  Then again, nobody in this office would really deal well with being leashed.  Hmmm.

An all too often overlooked truth of living with Great Danes:  They abhor being away from their people and require a lot of human companionship–indoors.  Note Perdita’s pouting lip!

If the event looks like somewhere you want to be, we met our goal. :-D

Visit the Washington State International Kite Festival website for more information.  It’s a site we’re proud to have built but we’re not saying too much about it today.  We’re in the process of rebuilding the site, which shares cyberspace with the only kite museum in North America, the World Kite Musuem & Hall of Fame.  Stay tuned!

Building Castles on the Beach

May 21st, 2009 by Keleigh | 0

Keleigh and Keith have been big fans of SandSations since the very first event 25 years ago and haven’t missed one since moving to the beach full-time back in 1994.  How can you not love an event that promotes spending an entire day on the sand?  From master castle builders, who compete year-round, to the children and family categories which require no experience whatsoever, SandSations is fun for everyone.  We especially like that a key judging criteria is how much fun participants are having and how entertaining they are to the crowd.

Seven years ago, our local  No-Kill Shelter sponsored the first Sand Flea Pet Parade, which quickly became a fan favorite.  Prizes are for events any dog could win, which makes it a hoot.  We’ve been proud sponsors since that first year and it’s been amazing to watch participation grow.

SandSations Long Beach WA

This year, as is the case most years, there was a new logo and color palette to work into the brochure, a tri-fold piece that doubles as a simple entry form.  One of the things that works well for this brochure is the juxtaposition of earthy sand and unnatural, bright, “beachy” colors.  The front cover really pops off the shelf, yet opening the brochure, the viewer isn’t assaulted with hundreds and hundreds of words.

This is the event’s third year with a variation on this general brochure design and it has been serving them well.  In fact, participation and onlookers to the event are strong!  The Long Beach Merchants Association is looking for help in organizing the event, however.  The team running the event is ready to put down their shovels and the group desperately needs new energy to pick them up and dig out a shiny new SandSations.  If you’re interested, let us know and we’ll get you to the people you need to talk with, else visit longbeachmerchants.com for a list of Board members.
